Background

St. Mary's Piscataway (SMP) Youth Soccer is a member of the Southern Maryland Catholic Youth Athletics (SMCYA) league. SMCYA is a recreational league focused on the development of beginner soccer skills. It is designed for building friendships and introducing children to the concept of team sports. Children grades K4-8th Grade are welcome to come out regardless of religious affiliation or athletic ability.
Established in the 1970's, the association was built by a group of parents who wanted a sport for their children in the community. One that fostered family and friendship under the umbrella of the Catholic Faith. All people in the community were welcomed in hopes of drawing people into the Catholic Faith by reaching into the community through sports and fellowship. This league continues to grow based on the same principal of faith, fellowship and community.
The fields were simply grass lots and together the parents brought in dirt, graded and sodded what is known as the small field at St. Mary's. Years later the same group of parents got together and built the large field on the swampy grounds behind the school. They again graded the site, brought in dirt, sludge, and sod to build this field. The goals were cemented in as a safety feature so the school could use it for the children to play on during the day. The fence was later added as a safety feature.

“I am not a perfectionist, but I like to feel that things are done well. More important than that, I feel an endless need to learn, to improve, to evolve, not only to please the coach and the fans, but also to feel satisfied with myself. It is my conviction that there are no limits to learning, and that it can never stop, no matter what our age.”
